The SEO Surgeon Glossary
Plain-English definitions for the technical SEO terms that matter. Every term links to a dedicated definition page so you can go deep, and back out to the tools and problems that put each concept to work.
Crawl Budget
The number of pages a search engine will crawl on your site within a given timeframe. Larger, well-linked sites get a bigger budget; wasted budget on low-value pages starves important ones.
Canonical URL
The single, preferred version of a page you want Google to index, declared with a canonical tag. It prevents duplicate-content issues across similar URLs.
SERP
Search Engine Results Page — the list of results Google returns for a query, including organic listings, ads, and rich results.
INP
Interaction to Next Paint — a Core Web Vital measuring how quickly a page responds to user input. Good is under 200 milliseconds.
LCP
Largest Contentful Paint — a Core Web Vital measuring how fast the main visible content renders. Good is under 2.5 seconds.
CLS
Cumulative Layout Shift — a Core Web Vital measuring visual stability. Good is under 0.1; high CLS means the page jumps as it loads.
E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — Google's quality framework for judging content and its creator, especially for YMYL topics.
Rich Results
Enhanced search listings (FAQ accordions, star ratings, breadcrumbs) generated from structured data. They increase SERP footprint and click-through rate.
JSON-LD
JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data — the recommended format for adding structured data to pages, usually in a <script> tag in the head.
Entity SEO
Optimising around entities (people, places, things) and their relationships so search engines understand your content semantically, beyond raw keywords.
Internal Linking
Links from one page on your site to another. Strategic internal links distribute authority and help crawlers and users discover content.
Orphan Page
A page that no other page on your site links to. Without internal links it receives little authority and is hard for crawlers to find.
Indexing
The process of a search engine storing a page in its database after crawling it, so it can appear in search results. Not every crawled page gets indexed.
Crawling
The process of a search engine bot discovering pages by following links and reading their content. Crawling is the step before indexing.
Robots.txt
A file at the root of your site that tells crawlers which pages they may or may not crawl. It controls access, not indexing.
XML Sitemap
A file listing your important URLs that you submit to search engines to aid discovery, especially for new or deep content.
Meta Description
The HTML tag providing a page summary shown in the SERP. It does not directly affect rankings but strongly influences click-through rate.
Title Tag
The HTML element defining a page's title, shown as the clickable headline in the SERP and a key on-page ranking signal.
Anchor Text
The visible, clickable text of a link. Descriptive anchor text passes topical relevance to the target page.
Noindex
A directive telling search engines not to index a page. Accidental noindex is a common, traffic-killing mistake.
Crawl Depth
How many clicks a page is from the homepage. Pages buried many clicks deep receive less authority and are crawled less often.
PageRank
Google's original authority metric based on link quantity and quality. It flows internally through your links, so internal linking shapes rankings.
Domain Authority
A third-party score (Moz) estimating a domain's ranking strength based on its backlink profile. Useful as a relative benchmark, not a Google ranking factor.
Backlink
A link from another site to yours. Quality backlinks remain one of the strongest off-page ranking signals.
Long-Tail Keyword
A specific, lower-volume search query (often 3+ words). Long-tail terms are easier to rank for and convert well due to clear intent.
Search Intent
The underlying goal of a query — informational, navigational, commercial, or transactional. Matching intent is essential to rank.
YMYL
Your Money or Your Life — topics (health, finance, legal) where Google applies the highest E-E-A-T standards because poor advice can harm users.
Robots Meta Tag
An HTML tag controlling indexing and following of links on a per-page basis (e.g. noindex, nofollow), distinct from robots.txt.
Google Search Console
Google's free tool showing how your site performs in Search — impressions, clicks, position, and indexing status. It powers our analysis.
Soft 404
A page that returns a 200 status but shows empty or error content. Google treats it like a real 404, wasting crawl budget.
Core Web Vitals
Google's set of real-user performance metrics — LCP, INP, and CLS — used as ranking signals for page experience.
TTFB
Time to First Byte — how long before the browser receives the first byte of a response. A slow TTFB delays everything else.
FCP
First Contentful Paint — when the first text or image is painted. It measures perceived loading speed.
SSR
Server-Side Rendering — generating page HTML on the server so crawlers and users see content immediately, key for SEO.
SSG
Static Site Generation — building pages to static HTML at build time, fast and crawlable without a server per request.
Hydration
Attaching JavaScript to server-rendered HTML so it becomes interactive. Poor hydration can delay meta tags and interactivity.
Lighthouse
Google's open-source auditing tool for performance, accessibility, and SEO. Lab data, not field data.
Rich Snippet
An enhanced SERP result (ratings, FAQ, breadcrumbs) generated from structured data. Also called a rich result.
Knowledge Graph
Google's database of entities and their relationships, powering knowledge panels and semantic understanding.
Sitelinks
The extra sub-links shown under a brand's main result, generated from clear site structure and internal links.
Breadcrumb
A navigation trail showing a page's location in the site hierarchy, aided by BreadcrumbList schema.
Pagination
Splitting content across multiple URLs (?page=2). Needs careful canonical and internal-link handling for SEO.
Faceted Navigation
Filtering controls (sort, colour, size) that generate many parameter URLs, often requiring noindex or canonical control.
Crawl Frequency
How often a search engine revisits your pages. Popular, frequently-updated pages are crawled more often.
Index Coverage
Search Console's report on which of your URLs are indexed, excluded, or in error.
URL Parameters
Query-string values (?sort=price) that create duplicate URLs. They need canonicals, noindex, or Search Console parameter handling.
Web Vitals
Google's initiative for unified quality signals; Core Web Vitals are the three that count for ranking.
Helpful Content System
Google's sitewide system that demotes content written for search engines rather than to genuinely help people.
