Opportunity Score: How AI Scores SEO Potential per Keyword
Not every keyword is worth optimising. Some have massive traffic potential but are impossible to rank for. Others are easy wins but generate negligible traffic. The Opportunity Score cuts through this complexity by evaluating every keyword in your Search Console export against four factors: CTR gap, position leverage, intent strength, and commercial value. The result is a 0–100 score that tells you exactly which keywords offer the best return on your SEO effort. Here is how it works.
The Opportunity Score formula
Every keyword in your Search Console export receives an Opportunity Score from 0 to 100. The score is calculated using a transparent, weighted formula:
Opportunity = (CTR Gap × 0.35) + (Position Leverage × 0.25) + (Intent Strength × 0.25) + (Commercial Value × 0.15)
| Component | Weight | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| CTR Gap | 35% | Difference between your CTR and the industry benchmark for your position |
| Position Leverage | 25% | How much improvement is possible from your current position (4–12 = highest) |
| Intent Strength | 25% | Commercial/transactional queries score higher than informational |
| Commercial Value | 15% | Estimated revenue per click based on industry conversion rate and AOV |
Each component is normalised to a 0–1 range before weighting. The final score is the weighted sum, scaled to 0–100. Keywords scoring 70+ are top priorities; keywords below 30 are low priority.
Component 1: CTR Gap (35%)
CTR Gap is the most heavily weighted component because it is the most actionable. It measures the difference between your actual CTR and the industry-adjusted benchmark CTR for your ranking position. A large gap means you are losing clicks that you could recover with better titles and meta descriptions — no ranking change required.
How it is calculated
CTR Gap = (Benchmark CTR − Your CTR) ÷ Benchmark CTR. If the benchmark is 7% and your CTR is 2%, your CTR Gap is (7−2)÷7 = 0.71 — a 71% gap. This is a significant opportunity.
Why it matters most
CTR gaps are the fastest, cheapest SEO wins. Fixing a title tag takes minutes but can recover dozens of lost clicks per month. No other SEO activity has this ratio of effort to return.
What drives it
Weak title tags, missing meta descriptions, no price anchors, no urgency signals, intent mismatch between the query and your listing. These are all fixable without new content or backlinks.
Component 2: Position Leverage (25%)
Position Leverage evaluates how much improvement is possible from your current ranking position. Not all positions offer the same opportunity — positions 4–12 are the sweet spot because they are visible enough to get impressions but have significant room for CTR improvement.
| Position | Leverage Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Low (0.2) | Already at the top — CTR is near ceiling, limited room for improvement |
| 2–3 | Medium (0.5) | Strong positions, moderate improvement potential |
| 4–7 | Highest (0.9–1.0) | Visible on page 1, significant CTR gaps possible, high impression volume |
| 8–10 | High (0.8) | Bottom of page 1 — crossing into top 5 yields big gains |
| 11–15 | Medium (0.5) | Page 2 — improvement possible but requires content work, not just CTR fixes |
| 16+ | Low (0.2) | Too deep for small fixes to matter meaningfully |
This ensures that opportunities at positions 4–10 — where CTR fixes yield the most return — are prioritised over opportunities at position 1 (already winning) or position 20 (too deep to matter).
Component 3: Intent Strength (25%)
Intent Strength evaluates the commercial value of a keyword based on its search intent. Not all clicks are worth the same — a click from "emergency plumber Dublin" (transactional) is worth far more than a click from "what is a boiler" (informational). This component ensures that commercial-intent keywords are prioritised over informational ones.
| Intent Type | Strength Score | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Transactional | 1.0 | 'hire plumber', 'book boiler repair', 'buy running shoes' |
| Commercial | 0.8 | 'best SEO tool', 'plumber reviews', 'boiler repair cost' |
| Navigational | 0.5 | 'facebook login', 'brand name search' |
| Informational | 0.3 | 'what is CTR', 'how do boilers work', 'plumbing tips' |
SEO Surgeon analyses the query patterns in your Search Console data to classify intent. Keywords with buying signals ("hire", "buy", "cost", "price", "near me") are classified as transactional or commercial and receive higher intent scores. This ensures the AI recommends you fix revenue-generating keywords before traffic-generating ones.
Component 4: Commercial Value (15%)
Commercial Value estimates the revenue per click for each keyword based on your industry's conversion rate and average order value. This translates traffic potential into revenue potential — because a keyword that generates 100 extra clicks is only valuable if those clicks convert.
How it is calculated
Commercial Value = conversion rate × AOV, normalised to 0–1. A law firm keyword (2.5% × €400 = €10/click) scores higher than a restaurant keyword (2% × €45 = €0.90/click).
Why it matters
Without commercial value weighting, the AI would recommend fixing high-traffic informational keywords over lower-traffic commercial keywords. Commercial value ensures revenue impact drives prioritisation, not just traffic volume.
Example calculation: A plumber ranks at position 5 for "boiler repair Dublin" with 4,000 impressions and a 1.5% CTR. The benchmark for position 5 (plumber industry) is 3.75%. CTR Gap = (3.75−1.5)÷3.75 = 0.60. Position Leverage = 0.95 (position 5). Intent Strength = 1.0 (transactional). Commercial Value = 0.8. Score = (0.60×0.35) + (0.95×0.25) + (1.0×0.25) + (0.8×0.15) = 0.21 + 0.24 + 0.25 + 0.12 = 0.82 → 82/100. This is a top-priority opportunity.
Reading opportunity scores
| Score Range | Priority | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 70–100 | Top priority | Fix immediately — highest revenue impact per hour of effort |
| 50–69 | Medium priority | Fix after top-priority items — solid return on effort |
| 30–49 | Low priority | Consider fixing after higher-scored items are done |
| 0–29 | Minimal | Not worth the effort — focus elsewhere |
SEO Surgeon shows the top 5 opportunities only — quality over quantity. The top 5 typically represent 80% of available revenue upside. Trying to fix everything dilutes effort and delays the highest-impact work.
How opportunity scores guide your SEO strategy
Immediate action items
Keywords scoring 70+ are your "do today" list. These are almost always CTR fixes — title tag rewrites that take minutes but recover significant lost clicks and revenue.
Weekly action items
Keywords scoring 50–69 are your "do this week" list. These may include content expansions, new internal links, or meta description improvements that require a bit more effort.
Monthly action items
Keywords scoring 30–49 are your "do this month" list. These typically require new content, page restructuring, or authority building — bigger projects with longer timelines.

Frequently asked questions
Why is CTR Gap weighted at 35%?
Because CTR gaps are the most actionable and highest-ROI SEO opportunity. They require no new content, no backlinks, and no development — just title tag and meta description improvements. Weighting CTR Gap highest ensures the AI prioritises the fixes that deliver the most revenue per hour of effort.
Can a keyword with low traffic have a high Opportunity Score?
Yes, if it has a large CTR gap, strong commercial intent, and good position leverage. A transactional keyword at position 5 with 2,000 impressions and a 1% CTR (vs 5% benchmark) has a significant opportunity score even though its traffic is modest — because the revenue per recovered click is high.
How is intent strength determined?
SEO Surgeon analyses query patterns for commercial signals: "buy", "hire", "cost", "price", "near me", "book", "emergency", etc. Keywords containing these signals are classified as transactional or commercial. Keywords with question words ("what", "how", "why") are classified as informational. This classification is based on the actual queries in your Search Console data.
Why only 5 opportunities?
Quality over quantity. The top 5 opportunities by score typically represent 80% of available revenue upside. Presenting 20 opportunities would dilute focus and encourage scattered effort. Five focused, high-impact fixes beat twenty half-finished ones. After the top 5 are done, the next upload surfaces the next 5.
